John Hodgman is a funny man. A genius if you will, in his own un-hilarious way. He puts the "dead" in dead-pan humor. You might know him from his recent part time job as a reporter on THE DAILY SHOW, or perhaps his role as "The PC Guy" in Apple's new TV commercials. But my favorite is his book: "The Areas Of My Expertise" An amazing almanac of American history, science, culture and media as told by John. Interestingly enough, it is thoroughly not researched, and completely invented by the author.
One interesting chapter in his book is: "HERE ARE THE 700 HOBO NAMES YOU'VE REQUESTED" Which is exactly that, 700 hobo names. According to John, Hobo (the ragamuffin gypsy travelers of the 20's and 30's) changed America dramatically in several Historical moments. Of course it's all complete bullshit, but as I always say "it's not if you're right or wrong, it's how you say it." And John Hodgman says it like your 11th grade History teacher. Who are you to argue?
Strange as it sounds, hundreds of artists have posted illustrations of the various hobo's independently on the net. Someone finally threw together a website to house the thousands of drawings and celebrate American Hobo History.
