The King & The Dick

While everyone has seen this picture before (I've seen it on everything from t-shirts to posters) not many have seen the entire series from the famous meeting.  Looking through the 28 photos you realize what an awkward encounter this was.   

See Dick shake hands.  See Dick smile.  See Dick look confused as Elvis hands him autographed pictures of himself (his "gift" to the president.)   Very odd.

Even better is the high-resolution pdf file of the original handwritten letter, on American Airlines in flight stationary, from Elvis to the Nixon. 

"Dear Mr. President First I would like to introduce myself. I am Elvis Presley and admire you and Have Great Respect for your office. ...... Sir I can and will be of any Service that I can to help the country out. I have no concerns or motives other than helping the country out. So I wish not to be given a title or an appointed position, I can and will do more good if I were made a Federal Agent at Large, and I will help out by doing it my way through my communications with people of all ages. First and Foremost I am an entertainer but all I need is the Federal credentials."

I love the fact that Elvis wanted a badge?  These were the nutty Karate years after all!  The last page is a crazy list of every single phone number Elvis had, including 3 for the Colonel.  Curious who answers those numbers when you call these days?

The Planes The Planes

A pretty neat article about Airplanes as Architecture from inhabitat.com.   Very cool!

New York’s urban architect recyclers, LOT-EK, have recently designed a library in Guadalajara made entirely of refurbished airplane fuselages. Apparently when airplanes are put to rest, most of their parts are easily recycled. However, according to Noticias Arquitectura, the fuselages are the only parts that are rarely reused, because “the cost of its demolition exceeds the profit of aluminum resale.” Because of this, there are a ton of discarded fuselages strewn all over deserts of the western states

POST 100 - Keifer Yells "Move"

To celebrate my 100th post on the site, I give you Keifer Sutherland saving the Japanese from an energy drink on the subway!?   I'm really curious how much he got paid to do this ad?  It actually looks like they lifted 15 seconds of a 24 episode and moved it to Tokyo. (via: TVINJAPAN)

Oh Crap! Sandstorm!

Here is an incredible series of photos taken in Iraq about 1 year ago, when a gigantic sandstorm hit a US Military base.  There's no descriptions, but the photos are pretty frightening.  It looks at least 1000 feet high - like a mountain flying at you.

I might be the only person who actually liked the movie Hidalgo, but I remember thinking the desert sandstorm in that movie was cool, but unrealistic.   I reverse my decision, I think the real thing might be scarier.

Sam The Wacked Photog

Sam Bassett is one interesting man.  An extremely talented photographer who does fantastical portraits, and a licensed pilot since the age of 11.  His pictures remind me of David Lachapelle, but grounded in some sort of reality.  Whether it's two guys standing on top of a mountain in chicken suits, or an innocent grandmother holding two balls of fire - I somehow believe it.

If you're curious what the inside of my brain looks like, it would probably be a Sam Bassett picture.  Really fantastic stuff.  I promise, you'll find yourself looking at all 50 pictures on his site.   

Also check out his planned flight around the world.  Sounds like a seriously cool project!  God speed Sam Bassett.

Family Goes Chronological

We all have ideas like this, but rarely do we ever commit like this family from Buenos Aires.  Every year they photograph themselves in the same emotionless pose - looking straight at camera.  A clever and fun idea that is extremely well executed.

30 years in a glance!  Great.

Killer Robot Sculpture

I can't track any real information about this artist or his robot sculpture, but his work speaks for itself.  Simply uber-cool!   I want one.   Actually two would be nice.

Castle Events is your answer.  Forgive my late night laziness, but I'm too tired to translate this page.  German or Swiss, I don't know.   But it looks like the next event is in Zurich.  Check out the dress code section.  I'm not really clear on why certain underwear is ok while others are not.   

All I really want to know is if they play that monotonous single piano key music?   Kubrick was always a trend-setter!

Crazy Cool Sculptor

Australian born photorealistic artist Ron Mueck is one of a kind.  His parents were toy makers, and he worked in children's TV for 15 years.   After playing in the movie business, he changed everything and started making the most incredibly gigantic (and small) realistic sculptures.   

I've seen his work before, but most pictures fail to capture the real scale of his work.  I can across a Russian site with some great photos of an exhibit.   Absolutely amazing (and strange.)   

And I thought that naked pregnant Britney sculpture was wacky?
